A.C.'s film The Green Monster was inducted into the Museum of Broadcasting in 2001. Last year we also instituted a new program to train directors in the art of working
scenes of violence with the help of the fight director, and the actors. Ran Braun, an opera director from Europe, joined us, and had the opportunity to work with the company and to change his projects daily. The addition of the director completes the usual circle to create theater, and we were all so pleased at the success of this new idea, we want to offer it again. So, if you are a director yourself, or know someone who would benefit from this type of workshop, please consider joining us this spring! The prices for each workshop are listed below: Fight directors workshop: $1,500.00 Directors: $1,500.00 Actors Ensemble $1,100.00 There is a 10% discount if we receive your application early, before April 1, 2003,

Here are some of last year’s testimonials, and letters of thanks I received: Dear Suddeth, I just wanted to send you a brief note of thanks. The workshop was one of the best experiences I have had, acting, fighting, or otherwise. I just want you to know I will never forget this experience and I want to thank you especially for making it possible. I think my friends are starting to get tired of every other sentence that comes out of my mouth starting with "at the barn" this and "at Maine" that. Thank you again. Justine C. Turner (actress) I miss you all and the amazing energy we created! I can't imagine any other experience like the Barn... you all rocked my world. Drew Scott (actor) Allen, I had a wonderful time at the Barn. I wanted to gush about it on the day we left, but I'd probably have started to get over emotional. I've already said it, but thanks for all you've done for me (and all of us). It was a great learning experience, but more than that, thank you for your support and friendship. As you said, it'll take a while for all the information to be fully absorbed, but it's started to have an effect already. Johnathan Leverett (fight director) I had a great time at the barn and am really just starting to digestsome of the experience, we covered so much in such a short space of time. It was a great bunch of people and you guys really got us going. Paul Burke (fight director) I took the Barn Workshop in 2001 and it definitely was a learning experience for me... I recommend it. Dan O'Driscoll (fight director) And finally... Tax tip for 2002 from Neil H. Fishman, CPA, CFE: Remember that if you do not have a retirement plan where

Meron's 1st Shameless Self Promotion of the Semester! First off, mark your calendars for April 14,15, & 16, for the spring installment of the Brandeis Graduate Writing Showcase, which will take place in the Spingold Theater Complex at Brandeis University. Last semester's showcase, Blender, was a success and we are doing it again with all new work! Performances of my work are also being organized in NYC and California, more news on that as it materializes. Coming up very soon as part of the Brandeis Theater Season is Escape From Happiness, running February 25 - March 2nd at the Spingold Theater Complex. I am serving as Dramaturge, Assistant Director to CT Robert Walsh, and Assistant Fight Director to CT Robert Westley on this production. The cast is composed of the first year MFA actors. Upcoming Fight Director gigs on campus include David Mamet's Revenge of the Space Pandas, in a department project supervised by Arthur Holmberg and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, sponsored by the Hillel Theater Group. I will also be doing a fight for a documentary theater piece being put together by Angie Jepson & Cristi Miles, colleagues of mine from the graduate theater program and members of the 1st year acting class. In the Greater Boston area, I am fight directing Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet at the Footlight Theater Club in Jamaica Plain opening March 28th and running till April 12th. Go to http://footlight.org for more info. Costume design for this show is by Heather Chaffee, a colleague of mine from the MFA program at Brandeis. In scholarly news, my paper: A Performance Theory Analysis of the Practice of Kata in Karate-Do: Self Resolving Contradictions of Ritual, Spontaneity, Violence, and Morality has recently been accepted for inclusion in an upcoming E Journal sponsored by Brandeis University. Publication is scheduled for later in the semester - I will be distributing the exact URL when the journal is finalized. Stills are available and you may be able to spot me in some of the production photos. Thea, a short sci fi film for which I was Fight Coordinator, is currently in post production having all the lasers and stuff added. More news on that later. The MFA in Playwriting is going well (in spite of appearances, I am doing much more writing than fighting. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but the sword is louder). I will be unleashing a full length and several shorter works on the world some time in the next few months, but then, there will be another Shameless Self Promotion (tm) when that happens... Hope to see you all at the show! http://hometown.aol.com/ludimagist That's all the news for now... Contact me and let us know what you're doing! SAFD East Central Region Newsletter - Vol. 2, No. 16... Date: 4/13/03 Dear Friends, This is just a 'heads-up' on a on-going SAFD project that will need committed and organized volunteers across the country... Submitted for Cutting Edge - March/April 2003 Edition by Michael Gray FOODFIGHT: Local Theaters Fight Hunger! Continuing its tradition of charity work, like its involvement with Broadway Cares - Equity Fights AIDS, the SAFD is proud to announce the 2nd Annual FOODFIGHT: Local Theaters Fight Hunger Project. FOODFIGHT is a project, organized nationally by the SAFD, to raise the awareness of hunger via the local theater community in major metropolitan areas this October. Through direct contributions and performances, money and food will be raised for donation to local-area food banks and/or shelters.. FOODFIGHT has several possible avenues of support planned by the SAFD. First,
theaters would be approached by local SAFD city coordinators and asked to participate
as part of a food drive for a local food bank. Alternatively, the theaters
would be encouraged to donate all or a percentage of ticket proceeds or food
concessions to the same local food bank. Finally, one or more local stage
combat groups are encouraged to plan and promote a benefit showcase featuring
stage combat scenes and vignettes ranging from the comedic to the dramatic. FOODFIGHT History: In 2002, the 1st annual FOODFIGHT occurred in Atlanta, GA, and was coordinated by FD/CT Scot J. Mann and the Atlanta Stage Combat Studio in partnership with The Georgia Shakespeare Festival, Carolyn Cook, and Christy Costello. Food and money were collected at five theaters during the month of October. Donations at Actor's Express, Center for Puppetry Arts, Georgia Shakespeare Festival, Push Push, and Theater Emory resulting in an approximate total of an astounding 2000 pounds of food and $1500 benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The ASCS along with the Georgia Shakespeare Festival raised 600 pounds of food and
$330 at a stage combat showcase with seventy-five people in attendance. The program
from the 2002 Atlanta FOODFIGHT is available online at http://www.stagecombat.com/foodfight.html.
Additionally, the They Fight Stage Combat School, coordinated by Don Preston, raised 143 lbs of food in a pure community service effort donated to Senior Food Shelter of North East Minneapolis. FOODFIGHT 2003: For 2003, we would like to attempt the goal of raising 5000 pounds of food per participating city. At the time of this writing, Atlanta, Chicago, and Minneapolis have confirmed their participation in support of this event. Various ideas are being pursued as incentives for each SAFD city to compete. Multiple groups are encouraged to put on showcases or performance events in single cities; however, there will only be a single contact/coordinator per city responsible for keeping track of local events and participation. But, the more people that can assist each city in its planning, the better the overall results. If you are interested in assisting or learning more details about the coordination for your city, please contact FOODFIGHT Committee Chair Michael Gray at foodfight@safd.org or by cell phone at (773)793-6566. As the year progresses, further information will be available in future Cutting Edge issues and at the SAFD website: http://www.safd.org or at http://foodfight.stagecombat.com . BOUDICA by Jeffrey Fiske The largest rebellion against the Roman Empire was not the one initiated by Spartacus. It was the British rebellion of AD 60 lead by Queen Boudica. In AD 59 her husband, the king of the Iceni, died and decreed that half of his kingdom would go to the conquering Romans and half would go to his two daughters. Nero declared that two young women could not rule a province and sent a legion to occupy their land. When Boudica protested, the Romans had her flogged and raped the two daughters. Boudica, burning with rage, transformed herself into a warrior chieftain. Not only was the revolt commanded by a woman, but according to Tacitus, "there were more women than men in her ranks."
